Before sowing, it is important to check whether the brinjal seeds have been pre-treated with chemicals. Commercially available hybrid and open-pollinated brinjal seeds are often treated to protect them from soil-borne diseases and pests, ensuring better germination and healthier seedlings.

Time of Sowing Brinjal Seeds

Brinjal is a versatile vegetable that can be grown throughout the year, with the sowing season varying based on the region.
In the plains, brinjal cultivation is generally divided into three main crops:

  • Summer crop: Brinjal seeds are sown from February to March.
  • Kharif crop: Brinjal seeds are sown from March to April.

Method of Sowing Brinjal Seeds

Brinjal is mainly cultivated as a transplanted crop, starting with seeds sown in well-prepared nursery beds. The nursery soil can be enriched by mixing equal parts of sand and well-decomposed farmyard manure. Raised beds, typically 60–75 cm wide and of convenient length, are prepared to ensure proper drainage and healthy seedling growth.

Brinjal seeds can be sown in rows about 5 cm apart and covered with a thin layer of soil. A mulch of paddy straw or dried grass may be applied on top to retain moisture. Brinjal seeds generally germinate within 5–7 days. The seedlings are considered ready for transplanting when they reach 8–10 cm in height and have developed 2–3 true leaves.

Before transplanting, seedlings can be hardened by withholding water for 4–6 days. On the day of transplanting, light irrigation can be given, and seedlings should be handled carefully to avoid root damage. Once transplanted, the soil around the base should be gently pressed to secure the plants.

The spacing between plants may vary depending on the brinjal variety, soil fertility, and climatic conditions. Long-fruited varieties can be planted at 60 x 60 cm, while round-fruited types can be spaced at 75 x 75 cm. However, the exact spacing varies based on the method of sowing, season, region, and other factors. During the rainy season, brinjal is preferably grown on raised beds or ridges. On sloping land, small pits can be dug to reduce soil erosion, and seedlings may be planted in these pits for better establishment.
